Alan is president of House of Hanbury Builders, Inc, for 47 years operating as a full service remodeling company. In 2023 he changed his focus to teaching, mentoring, consulting and writing. He has been a member fo NAHB since 1979 and has attended every IBS in that time frame, often as a teacher, always as a student. His involvement is NAHB has included stints as chair of the Remodelers Council in 2001, the Education Committee in 2003 where he spearheaded the innovation of member chosen IBS education rather than staff. He chairted the Business Management and Information Technology committee (BMIT) in the early 2010s and has been an active member from the early 90s to present. He has been an active participant in the updating of the Residential Constructioin Performance Guidelines from 1989, when it was known as the Quality Standards, till present. His teaching includes over 20 classes at IBS starting in 1990, and 22 years teaching at the Remodeling Show starting in 1992, and the JLC in 1995 for 25 years mostly on business improvement subjects. His expertise is in pricing strategies, margin and markup, cash flow maximization, defensive estimating, budgeting and business planning. His writing includes many NAHB courses such as the CAPS series starting at inception in 2001 participating in all 4 rewrites. He has been the principal content provider for Business Management for Professionals and most recently for the 2025 rewrite of his 2000 Financial Management class. Alan has also been involved with the start of and tweaking of the Remodelers Cost of Doing Business Study since the early 90s when it was developed after the successful Builder's CODB study as well as the preamble on how best to use the report.
