Girls Build Portland, Oregon
Katie Hughes has surprised her mother by managing to combine her degree in Social Work with her work as a carpenter. She founded the non-profit Girls Build in 2016 after teaching carpentry to both adults and children for many years. She is currently the Executive Director of the non-profit, based in Portland , OR which is dedicated to inspiring curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building. At Girls Build, girls 8 - 14 years old can learn building basics through hands-on workshops and summer camp programs. Girls Build works hard to include as many trades as possible including carpentry, plumbing, electricity, concrete, sheet metal, automotive, firefighting, bike mechanics and more. One of the more inspirational things she has seen is an eight-year-old driving a 16d nail while hollering to a friend requesting a new battery for her impact driver.
